Despite the current economic outlook, the U.S. space agency, NASA, has gone on a hiring spree. Late last year, NASA announced that they were looking for a few more folks with the Right Stuff. Undoubtedly, they have been overwhelmed by the response of America’s best and brightest.
Since their earliest days, the administrators at NASA have had to make some extremely difficult decisions as to who would and would not become an astronaut. Exhaustive tests were administered and a vast panoply of data was evaluated. Finally, a decision was rendered. The results speak for themselves in the successes and failures of NASA but by and large, their record is spectacular.
The space agency has come a long way in the past four decades and, these days, NASA does things a little differently. They rely on a much more automated system to evaluate their potential astronauts. Resumes are filed electronically, pre-hire tests are conducted via the Internet and background checks are done without ever having met the candidate.
As you can imagine, NASA has access to the best technology in the world and that makes these procedures relatively easy to manage but that misses the point. Instead, the savvy business person should focus on the fact that NASA, filled with the best scientists and engineers in the world, uses software and technology to help in their HR processes. Shouldn’t you consider the possibility that your company would benefit from automating some of its more routine HR processes?
