There isn’t a manager or employee alive who doesn’t have a complaint or two against their current employer. Most just accept the fact that life isn’t perfect and get on with their duties. Some employees, however, seem to make a “career” out of complaining.
Woe to the manager, though, who fails to deal quickly and effectively with this type of insubordinate employee. There is no surer path towards lowered morale and decreased productivity than a constantly complaining coworker. The attitude is infectious and can breed a whole new slew of unreasonable complaints.
The responsible manager must isolate the problem employee, counsel them on their actions and set a standard for further behavior. This process does not mean that the unhappy employee cannot complain, but the complaints must go through the proper channels and be kept out of the workplace.
Accomplishing this task to everyone’s satisfaction is difficult and somewhat treacherous. It is an excellent idea to include several levels of management in the process and to document every step along the way. The best solution is to utilize an HRIS which can easily guide you through the process.
